Designers of classic fashion as well as avant-garde designers find the look of sports clothing modern and glamorous, a principal on which Coco Chanel founded her fashion house. As the current designer for Chanel, Lagerfeld has continued with sports-inspired looks in the haute couture and ready-to-wear lines. From mountain climbing looks to this motorcycle-inspired piece, these interpretations associate the wearer with a young, healthy and active mind and body. The body-conscious lines are also an important part of the popular appeal of sportswear. Yet, the pieces are distinctly identified by Chanel constants--pearl accessories and interlocking double C logos.
The flatfell seaming, topstitching and shoulder padding on this piece echo structural and protective features of real racing leathers. The pleated areas at the knees and jacket back are expandable. Racers rely on this feature for extra flexibility while in the riding position. Vertical strips of elastic sewn on the inside govern this construction feature.
